When Should My Baby First See a Dentist?

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends your baby’s first dental visit by age 1 or within 6 months of the first tooth. We know that might feel early, but these first visits are gentle, quick, and incredibly important.

Early visits let us check for signs of decay, evaluate jaw and bite development, and give you personalized guidance on feeding, cleaning, and teething.

💡 Tip: Bring your baby when they’re well-rested and recently fed. A calm, comfortable baby makes for a smoother first visit.

Common Questions About Baby’s First Dental Visit

Answers from our board-certified pediatric dentists.

Yes. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the American Dental Association both recommend a first visit by age 1. Early visits help us catch issues like decay before they progress and establish a comfortable relationship with the dentist.
Your baby sits on your lap facing you, then leans back into the dentist’s lap. It is a quick, gentle exam called a “knee-to-knee” technique. Most babies do great with it.
We still recommend a visit. We check gum health, jaw development, and screen for potential issues. We also provide important guidance on feeding and oral hygiene habits.
Wipe your baby’s gums gently with a soft, damp cloth or infant gum brush after feedings. Once teeth appear, use a tiny smear of fluoride toothpaste (about the size of a grain of rice) on a soft infant toothbrush.
