Dental fillings are one of the most common treatments in pediatric dentistry. When a cavity forms in your child’s tooth, the decayed portion needs to be removed and replaced with a strong, durable material that restores the tooth’s shape and function.
At Junior Smiles of Stafford, we use tooth-colored composite fillings that blend seamlessly with your child’s natural teeth. Unlike the silver (amalgam) fillings you may remember from your own childhood, composite fillings are virtually invisible and bond directly to the tooth structure for a secure, long-lasting repair.
We apply a flavored topical gel to the gum first, so your child barely feels the small amount of local anesthetic that numbs the tooth. Many kids say they just felt a little “pinch.”
Once the area is completely numb, the dentist gently removes the damaged part of the tooth. Your child should not feel any pain during this step.
The tooth-colored composite material is applied in layers and carefully shaped to match the natural contours of the tooth. A special blue light hardens each layer in seconds, creating a strong, durable bond. We check the bite and your child is ready to go.
Our office is designed for kids. From the waiting room to the treatment chair, everything is built to make your child feel comfortable. We take our time, explain each step in kid-friendly language, and make sure your child feels safe throughout the entire filling process.
From filling types to aftercare, here’s the full picture.
Our preferred choice for most fillings. Matches your child’s teeth, bonds directly to the tooth, and requires less removal of healthy tooth structure.
Sometimes used for very young children or fillings near the gum line. This material releases fluoride over time for added protection against future decay.
Tooth sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweet foods, visible dark spots or discoloration, pain when biting down, or a small hole your child can feel with their tongue.
Baby teeth hold space for permanent teeth and are essential for chewing, speaking, and overall oral development. Untreated cavities can cause pain, infection, and damage the adult teeth forming below.
Composite fillings typically last 5 to 10 years or longer with proper care. For baby teeth, fillings only need to last until the tooth naturally falls out.
Composite fillings are fully set before your child leaves. We recommend waiting until numbness wears off before eating a full meal. Soft foods are a great choice for the first hour or two.
“My daughter needed her first filling and was so nervous. The team at Junior Smiles was incredibly patient and gentle. She didn’t even cry! They explained everything to her in a way she could understand. We’ll never go anywhere else.”
