Why Dental X-Rays Are Important

A visual exam can tell us a lot about your child’s oral health, but it cannot reveal everything. Dental X-rays allow us to see what is happening below the gumline and between the teeth, areas that are impossible to examine with the naked eye.

With X-rays, we can detect problems early, often before your child feels any pain or discomfort. Catching these issues early means simpler, more comfortable treatment for your child and fewer surprises down the road.

What Happens During an X-Ray Visit

1

Preparation & Comfort

We place a lead apron and thyroid collar on your child for protection. Our team explains each step so your child knows exactly what to expect and feels safe.

2

Quick Digital Imaging

Your child gently bites down on a small, child-sized sensor while the image is captured in seconds. Digital sensors require far less radiation than traditional film.

3

Review & Discussion

Images appear on screen instantly, allowing us to review them with you right away. We explain what we see and discuss any findings or next steps together.

🛡 Safe Digital Technology

Up to 90% Less Radiation

Our office uses digital X-rays, which emit up to 90% less radiation than traditional film X-rays. A single digital dental X-ray exposes your child to roughly the same amount of radiation they receive during a short airplane flight or a few hours of normal daily background exposure. The American Dental Association and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry both confirm that dental X-rays are safe for children when proper safeguards are in place.

Common Questions About Kids’ Dental X-Rays

Answers from our board-certified pediatric dentists.

That is completely normal, especially for younger children. Our team is experienced at working with kids of all ages. We use smaller, child-sized sensors and take our time to make sure your child is comfortable. If a particular X-ray is too difficult, we will try again at the next visit rather than force the issue.
Absolutely. You are welcome to stay with your child throughout the entire process. If you remain in the room during the actual exposure, we will provide a lead apron for your protection as well.
This question usually applies to parents rather than patients, but if a pregnant mother needs to be near the X-ray area, she will be given a lead apron. The radiation from a digital dental X-ray is extremely low and the beam is focused on a very small area, but we always take every precaution.
Yes. Many cavities begin between the teeth where they cannot be seen during a visual exam. X-rays let us catch decay in its earliest stages, when treatment is simplest. They also help us monitor the development of permanent teeth and make sure everything is progressing normally.
The frequency depends on your child’s individual needs. Children at higher risk for cavities may need bitewing X-rays every 6 to 12 months. Most children with low to moderate cavity risk benefit from annual bitewing X-rays. A panoramic X-ray may be recommended every 1 to 3 years to track permanent teeth and jaw growth. We never take X-rays unless there is a clear clinical reason.
We use three main types depending on what we need to evaluate. Bitewing X-rays are the most common, taken at routine checkups to detect cavities between teeth. Periapical X-rays capture the entire tooth from crown to root, used when investigating pain or infection. Panoramic X-rays capture the entire mouth in a single image, useful for evaluating permanent tooth development and planning orthodontic treatment.
